Henry David Potwin, Conceptual Realism Artist - Overview od David's work posted December 2025 Overview of the Work of Henry David Potwin Henry David Potwin is a Texas-based painter known for vivid narrative works that blend realism, symbolism, and social commentary. His paintings often explore the lives of everyday people, political and cultural issues, and the boundary between dream and reality, encouraging viewers to look deeper into a scene and discover layered meanings. Alongside his conceptual work, he is an accomplished and in-demand portrait artist. Potwin’s artistic foundation includes formal training and mentorship. He studied Fine Arts at the University of Houston, where he was a classmate of renowned painter and filmmaker Julian Schnabel. Earlier in his development, he studied under noted painter Eric Gibbard in Taos, New Mexico, whose influence helped sharpen his technical skill and appreciation for expressive, narrative-driven figurative painting. A substantial portion of Potwin’s artistic growth occurred during a 25-year period of federal incarceration, where he worked daily and produced a significant body of work. Since his release in 2017, he has continued painting full-time, expanding his thematic scope and growing his collector base. His work is now widely recognized in Texas and beyond, with many pieces held in private collections. Potwin has exhibited in galleries, cultural centers, and museum spaces, including both solo and group exhibitions. His shows have featured paintings with strong social messages, surrealist influence, and technical precision — all core to his practice. Portrait Details The quality of a photograph is critical to the likeness, and resulting composition of the finished work, especially in a naturalistic piece. Selfies are not a good source, unless you want the exaggeration of features that are a result. The artist prefers professional photographs, natural lighting or studio professional lighting. 45 degree from frontal light source gives a nice effect. Flash is not desirable as the result creates unnatural lighting. For best result, the artist wants to see eye color, ear shape, teeth edges, and personal details. If more than one subject is involved, he will want to see them together in one photo. This is true no matter how the artist interprets the photo. Photos can be sent by text or e-mail, and several shots are preferred even in the same position. You will be sent regular texts during painting to keep you in the loop and show you the progress. of your portrait Upon receipt of photos and the agreement of size the artist will give a firm quote of the final price. The artist will begin painting upon receipt of 50% down payment. Upon your acceptance of the painting via text or in person, to your satisfaction it will be delivered the best way, with tracking number at no charge.
